What On Earth Does ‘Blowing Bubbles’ Mean?

Many thanks to DE for alerting me to this: https://quiscustodietipsoscustodesblog.wordpress.com/2017/02/05/the-curious-case-of-the-rat-the-pig-and-the-weasel/amp/

  1. With the regards the bomb at Frizzell’s fish shop the rooms above were not a meeting place for the UDA’s leadership as the IRA tried to claim. Johnny Adair, however, was running a Loyalist Prisoner set up there and organised mini buses runs for prisoners relatives to and from the Maze.

The thought that the leadership of a paramilitary organisation would meet at the same location, at the same time and on the same day each week certainly flies in the face of basic security measures.

  2. Christopher Owens

Henry McDonald has written about being in that office not long before the bombing, and it wasn’t to grab a fish supper.

  3. I don’t doubt the that members of the UDA used the office back in the day, but in 1993 there is no way the UDA Inner Council was meeting there each and every Saturday. That claim was simply the IRA’s attempt to justify the attack. They were after Adair and were obviously prepared to kill civilians in their quest and at a time when the UDA was on rampage. The retaliation for the bomb was horrific enough. What would have happened if the IRA had actually killed Adair just doesn’t bear thinking about.

  4. Ed, pretty important typo there.

Yes, really. By the time of the Shankill Rd Bomb the UDA Inner Council were NOT meeting every Saturday at that location. However, Adair was running his Loyalist Prisoners racket each Saturday from there and this what the Provo’s became aware off. Hence the bomb attack.

Meetings of the complete Inner Council were sporadic due to one member from the Coleraine/Derry area being reluctance to make the journey to
    Belfast on a regular basis.
