   The thing is hypocrisy is the one commodity you can find in just about any political point argument/statement – we Irish belong to the western democratic european tribe and losses form our tribe are more keenly felt – I found myself really, really, really shocked when I heard the number of Dutch losses as opposed to the simple shock when I heard about the crash initially.

   That’s the way we are – programmed to be tribal and territorial – as our recent spats here in hibernicus immaculatus with perfidious albion illustrates for the last number of centuries.

   …and can you can name me one political argument by one politician that can not have the charge of hypocrisy levelled at it?

   Ed: Odd that you focus your attention away from the aggression of Putin in Ukraine and speak of hypocrisy of the US. THE DIFFERENCE, in case you missed it, or don’t want to remember, is that when the US Navy ship down the Iranian airliner , the US acknowledged the error, expressed regret and offered compensation to the bereaved families. When do you expect Me Putin to accept responsibility for the Malaysian Airliner tragedy ? Ed

   Perhaps we should examine the facts?

   The settelment finally reached at the International Court of Justice between Iran and the US govt finally forced the US to pay compensation to the victims of Flight 655. At no point did the US apologise or admit responsibility for the attack.

   None of the officers on board the Vincennes were ever disciplined or punished for the crime. In fact the commanding officer on the day, William C. Rogers, III, was awarded the Legion of Merit for “exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements”

   George H. W. Bush, the vice president of the United States at the time commented on the incident during a presidential campaign function (2 Aug 1988): “I will never apologize for the United States — I don’t care what the facts are… I’m not an apologize-for-America kind of guy.”
