Hypocrisy Over Putin And Ukraine….

At the risk of angering friends on the Left, I feel it necessary to highlight the hypocrisy of the US and the UK in their protests over Russia’s behaviour towards Ukraine. After all the unbridled jingoism that accompanied the US invasion of Iraq and the UK invasion of the Falklands is within the living memories of a lot of my readers. A case of ’when we invade’ it is a crusade for freedom, but when the Ruskies do it, well, it’s a crime……

    Britain first laid claim to part of the Falklands in 1765. Just how old are your readers?

    I doubt if the people of Ukraine would align their situation with the historical actions of the US and UK. Having watched Orla Guerin’s BBC report from Eastern Ukraine it is clear that this is a conflict which has been ongoing since 2004 and which has been largely ignored in the West but which Ukrainians now believe threatens their independence. To condemn two of the key protestors is neither here nor there when twenty seven Foreign Ministers of the EU have expressed the same views and taken similar sanctions. Views from the left and right of politics in Europe are well aligned in their view of Putin and his increasingly unstable behaviour.

    Putin’s actions in Ukraine constitute a straightforward landgrab of the territory of an independent sovereign and democratic nation and so are fundamental violations of international law. No amount of strawman arguments about the Falklands (Argentina actually invaded the territory) and Iraq alters that basic fact.

      Argentina invaded its own islands, the americans invaded Iraq and people like you cheered, Briain invsded India, and Ireland and a host of Africsn and Asian countries, and so on and people like you cheered. You are a hypocrite

Russia is not well served by Putin and his oligarchs who bleed the country dry and distribute it’s wealth all over the world while living standards at home fall well short of the socialist standards they purport to represent.

    Just to play devil’s advocate, if your logic is that Argentina invaded it’s own islands then you could say Britain invaded it’s own island, i.e Ireland. Ireland is only 12 miles from Britain. The Falklands are 300 miles from Argentina. Just saying…
